Professional Cycler To Attend Graduation And Ride In Cycling Classic On Same Day

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It is going to be a busy Sunday for 21-year old Robin Carpenter. First he will head to commencement at Swarthmore College, and then he will follow that up by riding in the Philly Cycling Classic.

Carpenter will get his degree in economics in the morning and then head out to Manayunk for the start of the race.

"Kind of had an idea they would be (at) a similar time and once I realized they were the same day it came down to, I don't know, a little bit of a coin toss really. But my parents, everyone says that graduation is really for your parents, and they supported me in whatever decision I wanted to make, so I decided that I really wanted to do both and at least wanted to try and at least get the experience of graduation done in the morning and then head over to the race as soon as possible."

Carpenter isn't doing this just to do it; he is a professional cycler and a member of the Hincapie Sportswear Development team.

As for the immediate future, now that's he's graduating his focus will be on his cycling career and once that's over he says he'll focus on a career in economics, or maybe even more higher education.
