3 On Your Side: Best Things To Buy In January

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --
Did you shop until you dropped over the holidays?

Since shopping crowds thin out considerably after the holidays, retailers are really trying to get people back into stores. In a number of categories, you'll see some pretty good deals.

If your New Year resolution includes getting fit, Mark LoCastro at Dealnews.com says there's no better time than January to buy fitness equipment. According to LoCastro, "There are actually double the number of deals in January versus any other time throughout the year. Treadmills, elliptical trainers, training DVDs are great things to buy from 30 to 70 percent off."

In the market for some new furniture? You may be in luck as stores move out the old and move in the new. LoCastro says, "These are huge items that take up a lot of showroom space, so they really need to clear their inventory of 2013 and older models to make way for the 2014 new furniture collections."

Plan on doing your own taxes this year? According to LoCastro, "Take advantage of any tax software deals that you see now, because last year, the trend was the best deals were in January and as we approached tax day in April, the deals got worse and worse."

And even though it's cold outside, you can find red hot deals on winter apparel. LoCastro says, "You're talking about 30-70 percent off coats and sweaters and things like that, because these clothing retailers and stores want to clear their winter inventory to make room for spring and summer apparel."

You'll also want to keep an eye on electronics clearance sales, especially those involving items where the 2014 model has been upgraded. This is the time of year when new electronics products are introduced. As soon as those items are available on the market, you'll often see steep price cuts on 2013 models and older generations.
