Gov. Christie Cancels Thursday Appearance In Philadelphia

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The non-partisan political watchdog group Committee of 70 is checking the calendar to see when it can reschedule its big fundraising breakfast.

The event was cancelled due to the sudden illness of the featured guest, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

It's the Committee of 70's only fundraiser of the year and it's a big one.

More than 600 people were expected to show up at the Bellevue to hear Chris Christie speak. But early Wednesday evening, the Committee of 70's president and CEO Zack Stallberg got a call from Christie's office that the Governor was sick and had to cancel.

"It's just a big disappointment," Stallberg said, "and we'll try to put the pieces together moving forward. I'm sure the Governor wanted to come, but people get sick."

That's when a long night of scrambling to get the word out began.

"Fortunately, thanks to Newsradio and Twitter and all the ways of communicating these days, I think we were able to get to most of the people last night," he said.

Stallberg believes that without social media, 90% of the attendees might have arrived this morning.
