Treating The Common Cold

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The common cold or upper respiratory tract infection is one of the leading reasons for people to miss work or school or go to the doctor.

In most cases, colds are caused by viruses. Remember, antibiotics are not necessary when there is a viral infection. In fact, they won't work. The reason I say this is because many people go to the doctor and want antibiotics for a cold.

The best way to deal with a cold is with over the counter products and the classic chicken soup and rest and plenty of fluids option. By the way, if you are looking for the best way to prevent spread of the common cold you should cough or sneeze into your sleeve and wash your hands often.
