Back-To-School Backpack Giveaway Takes Place In Germantown

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- People in Germantown were helping neighborhood kids get ready to go back to school at the fourth annual school supply giveaway at the historic Concord Schoolhouse.

Backpacks and school supplies were provided by members of the Germantown Business Alliance. Michael Schweisheimer, treasurer of Concord Schoolhouse, says they chose to give away backpacks at the schoolhouse as a way to let people know about this historic site.

"We're giving away 150 backpacks to area children near our historic site which is the Concord Schoolhouse and Upper Burying Ground," Schweisheimer says. "We're bringing kids in from our immediate neighborhood in Germantown and giving them a good start for the school year with supplies and then giving them a tour of the schoolhouse."

Many neighbors stopped in for the back-to-school goodies.

"I'm not far from here," says neighbor Lydell Douglas, "I saw the commotion going on and so I said 'well, let me go and be nosy and stick my nose in and see what's going on' and I found out they were giving away things for the kids for back to school."

Douglas walked away with a backpack for her grandson filled with supplies, including a calculator, glue stick, crayons, composition book and a ruler.
