Police Academy Gets Underway In Camden County

By Kim Glovas

CAMDEN COUNTY N.J. (CBS)  --  The Camden County College Police Academy started training 104 new recruits today.

In six months they will hit the streets as newly minted Camden County Police officers.

The 104 men and women who started their police training will all be patroling the streets of Camden soon.

Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli said, "this is the first wave of  new recruits requiring full training."

He said, about 250 officers with previous training are already on the force and that urban policing requires special training.

"The urban training consists of ways to communicate with residents of the city, ways to identify urban problems relating to policing and ways to solve urban problems," Cappelli said.

When these recruits graduate in December, the county police force will have a full complement of 401 officers on board.
