Don't Overlook Eye Health

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's hard to think of something more important than your sight. But many people take their eyes for granted. And the eyes are often overlooked when it comes to your health.

Many common eye diseases don't have early signs. You may not know something is wrong until it's too late. That's why it's so important to have your eyes checked regularly.

A trip to the eye doctor is quick and painless. In addition to your regular checkup, ask your doctor about a dilated pupil exam. This is an important test.

Here's what to expect:

Your doctor will put drops in your eyes to widen your pupils. This lets more light in. Your doctor will then take a good look at the back of your eyes. He or she is looking for signs of disease. The test may leave your vision blurry for a few hours. Your doctor may do other tests to check your eye pressure, side vision, and ability to see at a distance.
