Local Non-Profit Helps Families Cope With Loss Of Mother

By Community Affairs reporter, Cherri Gregg

EXTON, Pa. (CBS) - Mother's Day is a tough day for kids who've lost their mom and a Chester County non-profit has stepped in to help families cope with the loss.

"For those of us, who have our mothers alive, the day is wonderful. For those who are grieving the death of a mom, it's very challenging," says Laura Munts, president of Family Lives On Foundation. She started the non-profit 16 years ago.

"A dear friend of mine was dying and she wanted to find a way to help her son and other children cope with what is a lifelong process of adapting to the death of a loved one," Munts explains.

She says the group helps families sustain traditions started by the lost parent. Traditions like "cooking, baking chocolate chip cookies, dad's famous barbecue, going to the Phillies games, going to the Eagles games, you name it."

They've funded one tradition per year for more than 200 children and on May 16th they'll host the Hearts For Mommy Fundraiser in Exton.
