PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It pays to be a smart consumer and, as people are being asked to be more responsible for their health care expenses, it is becoming clear that it is important in this area as well.

For instance, local independent pharmacies, where pharmacists are more likely to work with clients, offer some of the lowest prices.

Another great idea is to ask for generics. They are cheaper. Another key step is getting 90-day refills instead of 30.

The final suggestion is to travel to rural drugstores, where medications can be less expensive.
