PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A very interesting study looks at the importance of taking fiber into your diet. We already know that eating fiber can reduce the risk of stroke and it is really good for overall heart health. Now according to a report which looked at eight prior studies they might have a reason.

Researchers believe that dietary fiber works by forming a gel in the stomach and in the intestines. And this slows the absorption of food and nutrients and doesn’t make people eat as much food. In addition to that, it allows for the nutritional aspects of food to be absorbed in a more effective manner.

This is something that appears to have a long term effect. In other words, you have to eat dietary fiber and eat it for years. This study looked at a reduction in the risk of stroke and it was eight to 19 years.
