Report: Umbrellas Fight Skin Cancer

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new report in the dermatology edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that Americans should buy umbrellas - but not for the rain!

Umbrellas can fight skin cancer by blocking UV rays.

A study from Emory University measured the ultraviolet radiation under 22 different rain umbrellas and found that they block an average of 77% of UV rays.

The hope is that Americans might consider them an extra layer of protection.
