Lawyers For Pa. Death Row Inmate Who Murdered Teen Want Case Reopened

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Lawyers for a death row inmate who could be the first person executed in Pennsylvania since 1999 are asking a judge to reopen his case.

Attorneys for Hubert Lester Michael Jr. on Wednesday filed the motion with a federal judge in Harrisburg.

Michael pleaded guilty to the murder of 16-year-old Trista Eng, a girl he kidnapped in York County, about a half-hour south of Harrisburg.

State prison officials are making plans to put him to death by lethal injection on Nov. 8.

The Corrections Department this week contacted news organizations with details about the execution at Rockview State Prison.

Court records indicate Michael has repeatedly changed his mind about pursuing appeals. His lawyers' new filing says Michael has serious mental health issues.
