Delaware County Conducts Health Outreach For Senior Citizens

By Paul Kurtz

SHARON HILL, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County's senior medical adviser is on the road these days, visiting communities and handing out free health prevention information.

Inside the community center of Darby Township today, Dr. George Avetian (facing camera at right of photo) was interacting with a group of senior citizens, taking blood pressures and answering all kinds of questions about their health.

"If they have questions regarding medications, we will answer them for them," he said today.  "We will instruct them and inform them of the necessity for immunizations and vaccines.  We will direct them to clinics where the vaccines will be given."

Avetian is being assisted by what's known as a "wellness van," a vehicle set up to conduct a number of evaluations and screenings.

Avetian will be visiting four or five facilities in the county as part of a collaborative effort between Delaware County Council and Independence Blue Cross.  A big reason he is making the rounds like this is to help address the growing problem of illiteracy and health.
