Corbett's Budget Will Mean Big Job Cuts For Montco Non-Profits, Advocates Say

By Brad Segall

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - Non-profits in Montgomery County say services to the most vulnerable population groups are facing drastic cuts under Governor Tom Corbett's proposed budget for the Department of Health and Human Services.

The proposed budget moves some health and human service funds back to the county in the form of "block grants," but at the same time cuts those funds by as much as 20 percent.

Anne Frank is the President of the Greater North Penn Collaborative for Health and Human Services. She says funding cuts would mean job losses.

"You're going to lose a lot of tax revenue from all those people who aren't working at these non-profits and most importantly there's going to lose a lot of services to the most vulnerable in our community."

Frank says some agencies have already made cuts. "The amount of people that can be helped through groups like Meals on Wheels is just being lowered, so everyone is vulnerable: mentally disabled, senior citizens, children..."

Non-profits, she says, employ about 40,000 people in Montgomery County and budget cuts could mean job losses and decreases in tax revenue.
