Suspect Charged In New Year's Murder of Couple in Olney

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police have made an arrest in connection with the first two murders of the year.

Minutes before the 2012 New Year was rung in, two people were shot multiple times while sitting in a car at 2nd Street and Chew Avenue in Olney.

"An unidentified male walked up to the vehicle and had a very brief conversation before firing several times into the vehicle," says Philadelphia police captain James Clark, commanding officer of the homicide unit.

Clark says 31-year-old Arlette Aguero and 34-year old-Alejandro Garro were pronounced dead just after midnight.

Detectives quickly identified the alleged shooter and obtained a murder warrant for 31-year-old Kevin Brown.

Sometime last night, uniformed officers stopped a vehicle for a routine traffic violation and found Brown inside.

"He was arrested and charged without incident," Clark says, and adds that investigators don't yet know a motive.

"We just know there was a some type of previous altercation or bad blood between the female decedent and our shooter."

So far in 2012, there have been six murders in Philadelphia, but one top official says that in a rare occurrence, last weekend was homicide-free.
