Archbishop Chaput Writes Letter To Philadelphia's Catholics

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The new leader of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia has written a letter to his flock about the year to come to be read aloud at all masses this weekend starting tonight.

In the two page pastoral letter, Archbishop Charles Chaput warns members of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that 2012 will be a painful year. He talks of the priest sex abuse scandal, the priests being investigated and the possible school and parish closures and consolidations.

Msgr. Joseph McCloone is with St. Joseph parish in Downingtown. He says the message is timely.

"There is a lot of bad news, but the reason why we celebrate Christmas is that Christ is the good news. So we have to keep our hearts and minds focused on that."

Msgr. McCloone says the letter shows parishioners that the Archbishop is with them, and that they all have a part in the healing of the church.
