Pizza Deliveryman Shoots Would-Be Robber In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A pizza deliveryman shot a would-be robber while making a delivery in Philadelphia Monday evening, according to authorities.

The incident happened in the 700 block of East Price Street at about 8:30.

Police say the unidentified deliveryman was called out to that location but grew suspicious when he realized it was an abandoned block. When he called back the number used to order the pizza, police say an armed suspect walked up to the deliveryman and demanded money. Authorities say the suspect managed to steal $100, but the situation quickly took a turn.

The deliveryman and the suspect got into a struggle, at which point the deliveryman was able to wrestle the gun away, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department.

The 26-year-old suspect was subsequently shot once in the neck and once in the abdomen, authorities said. He was transported to Einstein Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
