Area Supermarket Chain Holds Competition For Best Grocery Bagger

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. (CBS) - The supermarket chain Giant is looking for its two best grocery baggers.   It held a regional competition today in Montgomery County, Pa.

If you still bag your own groceries, you know how hard it can be to get everything just right -- so the eggs don't break and the bag's not too heavy.

Fourteen employees -- all winners in their district competitions -- are now competing regionally.

Amanda Messersmith (at left in photo) represents the Westtown store, and says she has a special technique.

"Well, I actually got there an hour early, I had my coffee, and I studied the items.  I made sure I tested the weights of each, so hopefully I'll do a good job," she told KYW Newsradio.

Cole Rex of the Giant supermarket in Lehighton, Pa. (right) says he enjoys bagging because of the interaction with the customers.

"When I'm in bagging, I talk to everyone.  I know a lot of people that come into Giant so I can relate to them on things," he says.  "It's just like I'm talking to you right now -- it doesn't feel like I'm at work."

They are judged on weight of the bag, their speed, and politeness.

Two winners will move on to the state competition.
