Positively Philadelphia: A Hometown, Homemade Ice Cream Company

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - You may have seen Little Baby's ice cream tricycle truck riding around the area.  This is a new company that started with Pete Angevine of Philadelphia making ice cream for himself.

"I was really into making ice cream at my house, for myself.  The more and more I did it, the better and better it got.  And then friends and supporters like Jeff were, like, 'Hey, we should start an ice cream company.' "

Jeff (left) is Jeffrey Ziga, one of the partners of Little Baby's, and the one who rides the ice cream tricycle around.

On one recent sunny day, he and Pete (right) were at the pop-up garden at 20th and Market Streets, serving people ready to check out the flavors.

And what flavors!

(Pete:)  "Earl Grey sriracha ice cream; birch beer vanilla bean -- sort of tastes like a root beer float; cardamom caramel."

How do they think of these things?

(Jeff:)  "Balsamic banana!  I've never seen balsamic reduction served on a banana, but the alliteration of balsamic and banana sort of made sense.  We tried it and it worked!"

(Customer:)  "Mmm, very good -- creamy, cool, smooth.  Very flavorful.  That's the blueberry ginger."

(Young customer:)  "Mint Oreo.  I like it, it's good!"

The ice cream has become so popular that it is now being sold in one South Philadelphia store: Green Aisle grocery, at 1618 E. Passyunk Avenue.   And you'll soon be able to buy Little Baby's Ice Cream on other store shelves around the area.

(Customer:)  "We specifically came from Jersey today to seek them out," said one customer.  "We stopped at the grocery, bought some pints, and then came to get some actual."

And the name?

(Pete:)  "There's no story.  It doesn't mean much.  I'm a little baby, you're a little baby.  It's okay."

That's Positively Philadelphia!
