Coffee Shops And Bars Serve Up Awareness During 2nd Annual Bar AIDS

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Four local HIV and AIDS service organizations host an all-day fundraiser today.  All you have to do is buy a drink.

The 2nd annual Bar AIDS Philadelphia is raising money through drink proceeds.

"There are a total of 13 bars and three coffee houses that are participating this year," says Kevin Burns, executive director with ActionAIDS.  Where does the money go?

"It's a partnership between four AIDS service organizations here in the city, so it's ActionAIDS, Philadelphia FIGHT, Mazzoni Center and the AIDS Law Project."

Burns says Philadelphia has an infection rate that is five times the national infection rate.

"In West Philadelphia they found that 25% of kids 11-years-old are sexually active and not necessarily protecting themselves."

Participating coffee shops and bars will also be providing information all day, "So it's also a wonderful opportunity for us to do some outreach for people who have not been tested, to get tested and know their status."
