Positively Philadelphia: Local Pop Artist Mentors A New Generation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - For many years you could see pop artist Perry Milou painting in Rittenhouse Square.  He's had galleries in Philadelphia and around the country.  And now, he's turned his love of art into a school in Philadelphia for kids who also love art.

"I allow the children 100 percent freedom of their creativity, 100 percent of the time.  They come in, they discuss their ideas with me, we sketch them out, and I'll do a side-by-side to show them and teach them."

Milou has opened Palette Kids Inc., at 116 South 19th St. in center city, for ages five and up.  Student Faith Kurtzman (below) is nine.

"I like everything about art," she says.

What was she making today?

"Seashell butterflies.  I've done Lady Gaga."

(Milou:)  "I was watching the Grammy Awards last year and Gaga came out in some sort of wild space outfit and I was very inspired, so I created this piece called 'Caution Gaga.' "

(Kurtzman:)  "I saw the painting.  I really liked it, so I got the print.  I worked on it.  I put the costume tape for the hair, put the sparkles on and the glitter."

(Milou:)  "So she took the Milou giclée and embellished it, and that was our collaboration.  Now it's her masterwork at her home."

(Kurtzman:)  "It's in my room."

You've seen his art around town and it's also in a lot of famous people's homes, like Sylvester Stallone's.

Milou: "It was a portrait of him with his classic kind of falling-apart scarecrow hat.  It's called 'Balboa Blues.' "
