July 23rd Is National Hot Dog Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets each year. Keith Garabedian, the owner of Hot Diggity at 630 South Street, sees hot dog preparation as an art.

"So we try to bring as much culinary skill as we can to the hot dog. Either the way we cook the hot dogs, which we do slowly so they get a nice crust on them, or just the way we even chop our onions and vegetables making sure they're perfect every time."

He says the way folks like to eat their hot dogs varies across the country.

"In Seattle, they're known for putting cream cheese on their hot dog, so we decided to take that idea of cream cheese and mix it up with some pacific northwest flavors so we were inspired by lox and bagels. We made a garlic cream cheese and then we shredded onions and it's a lot of really fresh pungent flavors," said Garabedian.

Of all the hot dogs Americans consume annually, over 24 million hot dogs are purchased at baseball stadiums alone.
