Dog Beaten With Chain In Upper Darby, Owner Facing Animal Cruelty Charges

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- A man is in prison after admitting to beating a Pit Bull with a heavy chain in Delaware County.

"The step-mother told her son that she didn't want her anymore and that he had to get rid of her," said Justina Calgiano of the SPCA. "His means of disposal was to beat her with a chain, which of course is completely wrong and awful."

Upper Darby police say a witness saw 'Sky,' the 1-year-old female Pit Bull, being beaten with a chain on the 800 block of Main Street until the puppy stopped moving.

According to police, the suspect stopped beating the dog and simply walked down the street. The injured puppy followed her owner.

"She's the type of dog that you just don't understand why anybody would ever do this to any animal, let alone a really sweet one," said Calgiano.

The suspect then, allegedly, continued to beat the dog.

"They say a man walking by with a chain, in which case, they asked him if he had done it and he said that he had and they took him into custody," Calgiano explained.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Delaware County prison. He has been charged with Cruelty to Animals, Disorderly Conduct and Dog Abandonment.

'Sky' will be put up for adoption Tuesday.
