The Cape May Light House Goes Dark But Remains Open To Visitors

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A popular lighthouse down the shore is out of commission but not out of reach.

Nobody noticed until now that the Cape May Lighthouse has been dark for the last two months. The Coast Guard runs it.

"It's open for tourism right now but the actually light at nighttime, it's not running. They're waiting on a part to come in before the Coast Guard can get it working again," says Petty Officer Mike Lutz.

And that's proving to be difficult. The lighthouse has been in business for more than 150 years. Those parts have to be custom made.

Lutz can't estimate how long it'll take to replace the part that allows the light to rotate. But if you want to visit the lighthouse, you still can assuming you want to climb the nearly 200 steps to the top.

And if you're boating in the area, take extra caution.
