Pet Owners Splurging On High-End Food For Their Furry Friends

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Does your pet eat better than you? If you said yes, you are not alone.

A five-pound bag of hi-quality food runs nearly $20 on average at many specialty pet supplies stores.

Noe Benell is the owner of Bonejour Pet supply on 3rd street near Arch in Old city. She says pet owners want the best for their pets.

"I think a lot of it started with the pet food recalls in 2007 and a lot of people that just sort of  woke them up to maybe we should pay attention of what is going into my animals bodies."

She says dogs love the taste of the inexpensive food found super markets but the nutritional value in many cases is missing.

"And it's kind of like if you let your child eat McDonald's everyday then it wouldn't be very good for them. They'll probably be very happy with it for a while but in the long run it probably wouldn't be very good for them."

And she says there are healthier treats available too like peanut butter/banana doggie ice cream.

"They make three varieties. One for digestive health which has all the digestive probiotics. The hip and joint support and the skin and joint one has omega oils from salmon.
