Another Pa. Legislative Session, Another Budget Protest

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Tuesday was another session day for the state legislature and that brought another wave of protesters to the capitol in this season of discontent over the proposed state budget.

With Governor Corbett proposing steep cuts to close a multi-billion dollar budget deficit, each legislative session week has brought waves of protestors and activists to the capitol. Yesterday, it was a union-sponsored rally that brought hundreds to the front steps of the building.

The crowd heard from, among others, David Fillman, the head of the largest state employee union, AFSCME Council 13, who said, "A budget with devastating cuts for working families is wrong!"

On Monday, activists seeking to stave off budget cuts got some good news: state revenue collections are now a half billion dollars above projections for the fiscal year. But yesterday, Governor Corbett said that doesn't mean he wants to spend more than he's proposed, saying any surplus in the current fiscal year should be set aside in reserve or used to pay down debt.
