7 Philadelphia School Principals Get Awards For Excellence

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Seven Philadelphia school principals are being honored tonight with a prestigious award.

It's the first time the Lindback Foundation -- which usually honors teachers -- will be recognizing outstanding principals.

Longtime Central High School principal Sheldon Pavel (center of photo) is among the seven Philadelphia principals being honored at the Prince Music Theatre.

"No principal can run his or her school by himself or herself," Pavel notes.  "What a principal does is to try and put all the pieces together."

Each of the seven principals receives a $10,000 award.  Pavel says he'll use the money to "fill in the gaps" -- buying library materials, and supporting student contests and clubs.

The seven Philadelphia principals being honored are:

▪  Yolanda Armstrong, Pepper Middle School
▪  Charles Connor, Decatur Elementary School
▪  Patricia Epps, Forrest Elementary School
▪  David Kipphut, Swenson Arts & Technology High School
▪  Dr. Sheldon Pavel, Central High School
▪  Dr. Charles Staniskis, Franklin Learning Center
▪  Darlene Vaughn, Stearne Elementary School
