Groundbreaking Held For Lenfest Plaza

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday morning for Lenfest Plaza, Philadelphia's new civic space on North Broad Street, which should be finished by the end of the summer.

Wildly painted shovels, giant paintbrushes and a spray of confetti helped celebrate the groundbreaking of Lenfest Plaza, a new civic space on North Broad at Cherry Street, which will link the Convention Center to the Museum Mile and connect the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts' Landmark and Hamilton buildings.

"Marguerite, my wife's grandfather, was a student here and she had a great grandfather who exhibited here," Philanthropist Gerry Lenfest said.

Councilman Darrell Clarke says there was some opposition to the plaza, which will feature a huge paintbrush angled over North Broad Street, but: "I think the Convention Center coming on line gave people an understanding that this was part of a broader process and a broader vision as it relates to North Broad Street."
