Double-Decker Bus Crashes in Central NY; 4 dead

A bus carrying passengers from Philadelphia to Toronto crashed into a bridge in upstate New York. Four people are dead and several others are hurt.

KYW'S Mike Dougherty reports investigators say the bus didn't fit under the low-clearance rail-road bridge just off Interstate 81 near Syracuse and rolled onto its side after impact.

Don Carmichael, vice president of Coach USA which owns Megabus, says the bus was not supposed to be on the road where the crash occurred:

"That driver that was operating that particular trip is experienced -- he's made that trip a number of times. I don't understand why he was not on the prescribed route."

A Syracuse TV camera man says there are several signs and even flashing lights to alert motorists to the low-bridge, which has a posted clearance of 10-feet-9-inches.

Carmichael says the double-decker bus is 13-feet-tall.
