It's the 20th Annual Surf Memorial Contest in Avalon

The surfing contest is held each August in honor of Brendan Borek, an avid surfer who died of a rare cancer in 1991 at the age of 18.

KYW's Pat Loeb reports the 20th annual Surf Memorial Contest is taking place all day in Avalon.

Brendan Borek's other, Lydia Borek, says the first one was organized by neighbors to help the family pay Brendan's medical bills and now the family carries on the tradition to help others:

"All the money that we raise stays here in the county and helps local children and their families during the entire time of their illness."

Borek admits South Jersey may not be the best-suited place for a surf contest but Brendan was an avid surfer and there are many local surfers like him:

"You know, it depends on any given day if we have waves or not. We don't have the waves they have on the west coast but we make up in spirit for what's not there in waves."

The Surf Memorial features bands and food and goes till 4:30 this afternoon.
