Ray Didinger: Keeping Eye On Jaylen Watkins Vs. Steelers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Eagles will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers tonight in their second preseason game.

The Birds won their first exhibition match-up last week, beating Tampa Bay 17-9 at the Linc. In that game, rookie quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a rib injury and he is out tonight. Among the other players that won't play tonight because of injury - wide receiver Jordan Matthews (knee), linebacker Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) and defensive back Jalen Mills (hamstring).

Ray Didinger has his eye on Eagles third-year safety Jaylen Watkins, who played well last week in the team's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"He really hasn't gotten his career off the ground here in Philadelphia," Didinger said of Watkins. "But this year, Jim Schwartz -- the new defensive coordinator -- has taken Watkins and instead of making him kind of a Swiss army knife kind of player. A little bit of a cornerback, a little bit of a slot guy, sometimes safety. He [Schwartz] just said, 'Look, you're a safety.' He just put him inside, he put him in the safety position, and it looks like he's settling in there a little bit."

The starters are expected to play the entire first quarter and perhaps some of the second.

Safety Malcolm Jenkins and tackle Jason Peters are expected to play tonight after sitting out the opener against the Buccaneers because of injury.

Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, acquired in that trade with Tennessee this week, will not play tonight.

The Steelers lost their preseason opener last week, falling to Detroit, 30-17.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Comcast Sportsnet and Sportsradio 94 WIP's Ray Didinger about what to look for in this match-up.
