Hillary Clinton Secures Historic Nomination As Democratic Party's Candidate For President

Clinton's nomination means that she will go head-to-head with Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in November. Her nomination also follows a primary battle with Senator Bernie Sanders.

Sanders' supporters made their voices heard on the opening day of the convention as Sanders urged them to shift their support to Clinton in an effort to make sure that Trump did not take the White House.

Clinton officially received the nomination after being pushed over the number of needed delegates by the state of South Dakota.

After becoming the party's nominee, Clinton received congratulations from her daughter and from her husband, former president, Bill Clinton.

A strong gesture of unity also came from Bernie Sanders, who took to the microphone as the Vermont delegation read their votes. Sanders moved that all the votes officially be reflected for Clinton and that she be the nominee for the party.
