What's Cooking on 1060: Food Truck Season

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's food truck season! Here's what you can expect from the food truck community and where to find the gourmet trucks.

Food truck owner Michael Sultan says this is food truck season.

"In May, June, because it's not too hot yet, that's good eating weather, I call it!"

As owner of the trucks Taco Mondo, Street Food Philly and Say Cheese Philadelphia, Sultan knows where his collegues hang out.

"Every Thursday, there's a lunch truck line-up at the Navy Yard, Love Park, even though it's under construction, every day there are food trucks. The Porch at 30th Street Station, there's food trucks. All of the beer gardens pretty much have food trucks, unless they have their own food. The flea markets, the Clover Market, which is a great one out in the suburbs. They have huge a huge food truck gathering every Sunday."

Sean Parker, owner of Oink and Moo, says food trucks have become more gourmet over the years.

"The trucks these days look a lot better and they're putting out a lot higher quality food. The standards of health and safety are much higher as well."

And with the rise of social media, people tend to follow the food.

"It is a scene. And there's groupies!"
"Yeah, there's a large following."
"Huge!"

So what's in store for the future of food trucks in Philadelphia?

"Our new mayor is a huge fan of the food truck community, which is great for us. A lot of the rules and regulations that have come along with these trucks were established back in the 1980's when carts were popping up and the restaurant association banned together to create these rules, so that means that we can't park on Market Street, we can't park on Walnut Street. Will that change? I hope so!"
