What's Cooking on 1060: Hot Chocolate Hideaway

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Chocolate Cafe is the perfect winter hideaway. It's a semi-secret spot to sit and sip hot chocolate.

Kevin Paschall, chocolate maker and manager of The Chocolate Cafe, says the tiny Old City hot chocolate shop in the back room of Shane's Confectionery used to be a storage room. It opened last year after a clean out that took over a year.

"So we do six drinking chocolates," Paschall says, "and two different types of brewed cacao drinks."

Paschall says the hot chocolate cafe takes chocolate back to its roots.

"For most of human history," he says, "chocolate was a drink, long before it was a food."

He says they did a lot of research for the menu.

"We looked through a lot of historical texts," Paschall says. "Luckily, folks like Thomas Jefferson very extensively documented their love of chocolate."

The small cafe at 110 Market Street only has 3 tables.

"We get a lot of dates back here," Paschall says. "I've seen a lot of first dates, job interviews, it's a very intimate space."

And Paschall says this is the season for hot chocolate.

"We'll be steady as she goes until Valentine's Day," he says, "which sort of marks the end of the hot chocolate season, I'd say."
