What's Cooking on 1060: Olde is New, Eat is Coming, Meatballs and More

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The Olde Bar is getting ready for its official opening on January 9th, in the space that for many years was the home of Old Original Bookbinder's restaurant, at 125 Walnut Street, in Society Hill.

It's under the auspices of Philadelphia restaurant icon José Garces.

"I've been going back to the old Bookbinder's recipe book and seeing how they did things back then," notes chef de cuisine Mike Siegel (top photo). "I know this started in 1865, the Original Bookbinder's, and you know, a lot of those recipes look pretty old!  So we refreshed them and did our José Garces touch on it."

Meanwhile, Union Taco, on West Girard Avenue, has closed.  Owner Nick Farina says they'll be turning that space into a special event restaurant, called "Eat," to showcase the city's culinary talent.

"It will only be open 2-3 times a week," he says.  "What we would like to do is bring in up-and-coming chefs from different restaurants to give them a night to feature their stuff and give them an opportunity to have the run of an entire restaurant."

A new meatball restaurant opened quietly in early December, at 214 South Street.

Owner Giancarlo Frusone says the name, "Me 'N' Mo," stands for "meatballs and more."

"It basically features about five or six or seven meatballs every day," he tells What's Cooking.  "To go with that, we have, like, five different sauces and then all this magnificent pasta, which is really wonderful."
