The following are just a few of the most heartwarming stories of the year, but want to hear your stories of animal compassion, heroics and love in the comments below.

The story of Curious George
Curious George, a severely emaciated bulldog-pit bull mix, received a new lease on life in 2011. He weighed a mere 35 pounds when he was found wondering the streets. After being placed on a strict diet and eating every two hours, he steadily gained 30 pounds. After nursing him back to health, the Delaware County SPCA found him a safe and happy home. Due to national support for George's story, the Curious George Fund has been established in his name to care for dogs that come through the doors of the SPCA.

Daniel's miracle
Daniel, a 5-year-old beagle, was set to be euthanized in an Alabama shelter. Then, to the amazement of everyone, Daniel miraculously survived the gas chamber. Following his tragic experience, he received a clean bill of health and was brought to New Jersey by Eleventh Hour Rescue. Pilots and Paws assisted with the rescue and flew Daniel from Tennessee to New Jersey. Daniel's story made him an instant celebrity. He has made several appearances to raise awareness for pet adoption. Daniel has been adopted by a family committed to providing him with a safe and happy life.

Chucky gets a home

After nearly two years in the Pennsylvania SPCA, Chucky was awarded a permanent loving home. The 2-year-old pit bull mix was brought to the shelter as a puppy. According to the Fall 2011 SPCA newsletter, his owners were charged with dog fighting and abuse. Chucky was sentenced to the shelter until the case was resolved. After years of dancing and playing with the folks at the shelter, he was placed into a new home. The staff and volunteers at the shelter shower animals in protective custody with love and attention with the hope they, too, can be placed into a permanent home.

Dog walk raises big bucks

The Pennsylvania SPCA hosted their first dog walk in 2011.

According to the Fall 2011 SPCA newsletter, more than 200 people and 100 dogs showed up to raise money. The event took place at Wilson Farm Park and participants walked a 3.9 mile course. The event was a success and $17,000 was raised for homeless animals. Although an official date has not been announced, the shelter is planning on making the walk an annual event.
