Mayor Nutter: City Reevaluating Relationship With Occupy Philly

Watch Mayor Nutter’s press conference…

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Striking a tougher tone than he’s used in the past when discussing the Occupy movement, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says the city is reevaluating its relationship with the Occupy Philadelphia campers. Citing health and safety concerns, the mayor says the protesters are in violation of their city-issued permit.

“Occupy Philly has changed,” Mayor Nutter says. “We’re seeing serious health and safety issues playing out on almost a daily basis.”

Nutter told reporters at a press conference this afternoon that the Occupy group has not responded to the city’s health and safety concerns, which include the suspected use of open-flame cooking stoves near combustible tents and the lack of a clear emergency exit lane.

The city has been working with the protesters to identify a new location for the camp, so that repairs can be made to City Hall and a planned major renovation to Dilworth Plaza can begin (see related story). The mayor says the city has received no response from the group and he says the group has refused to work with the city. “Occupy Philly is now purposefully standing in the way of nearly 1,000 jobs for Philadelphians at a time of high unemployment.”

Protestor Seth Goldstein defended the group, “It’s a group of people. There are going to be problems, but you cannot paint the whole group with the actions of a few people.”

“We do not seek confrontation with Occupy Philly,” Nutter says. But, with a change in the Occupy group’s leadership and what the mayor sees as a change in its priorities, the mayor says the city must reevaluate its relationship with the protesters.

The mayor says there have been 15 emergency calls from Occupy, including an alleged sexual assault Saturday night (see related story). He says the police presence will be increased, but he didn’t have specific plans beyond that.

There are those in the encampment on Dilworth Plaza that agree with the mayor’s assessment. “The organization is getting divided,” one demonstrator says. “They’re being distracted and a lot of things that are going on are beginning to look like a problem and I can see the point of view of the people who are paying the money around here.”

Occupy Wall Street gangs commit criminal sabotage: a deliberate action aimed at weakening another entity through subversion, obstruction, disruption, or destruction: disruption of operations of one of the world biggest ports; disruption of small businesses work resulted in increased unemployment; disruption of banks’ economic operations; etc. Criminal sabotage is a class B felony punishable according to chapter 9A.20 RCW. US Authorities, including Philadelphia, shall take bold measures to enforce the US LAW, unless they support criminality and cover it under “freedom of speech” umbrella twisting the US Constitution in anti-American way.

Perhaps instead of evaluating occupy philadelphia, you need to be evaluating and acting on what goes on in this city.. Animal abuse, murder, robbery, drugs and litter strewn about. You are the mayor of a cess pool.

  • ktf

If so unhappy here, then move … maybe another city’s mayor can be your-everything … Just saying. You seem very unhappy here… and apparently for a long time…

Why not use the parking/tailgating areas of the Linc. Eagle fans may not be showing up after today’s game.

If this was a tea party event, they’d have been evicted after day one. Philly needs to get tough on these violent anarchists and arrest them.

OMG – you guys really kept health threats in control on your buddies project in East Mt Airy. There were even live electric wires draped over my house from that project. You have refused to engaged in any conversation with me. Put me in hospital several time. Repeated burglaries and refused proper police protection, rocks thrown at me. High Level city planner and other officials were very clear about seeing the public health of the dust and haz mat that went on for YEARS. has systematically abused and harmed and assaulted me for years. Live up to your own words and realize you are committing crimes against me. You don’t cooperate and you deliberately caused physical , emotional and property harm to the point that you have destroyed a lie and a family. You are not innocent of the claims you are accusing others of. You have colluded and supported serious crimes against me.

  • Hater

It seems to me that most Philadelphians don’t want these “occupiers” here. Mayor Nutter, you were elected by the people and for the people. Listen to your constituents and do the right thing.

  • Margaret Motheral

There has been years of safety and health issues at the East Mt Airy construction project, Mr Mayor which constituted environmental crimes and caused serious harm to adjacent neighbor, but city politics has proceeded for years to harm and destroy the life of someone who was simply living in their home. Why – because – Seth Williams refuses to prosecute the crimes of his friends and you all have colluding in harming me non stop for years.and letting it happen just like officials let Carl Greene abuse women and people looked the other way when those boys were abused at Penn State. You don’t allow anyone except your own friends any civil rights or protect the public if it inconveniences the green dollar of your friends. What have you done to support the goals of free speech and civil rights of Occupy. Nothing. You have pretended to tolerate them so Philadelphia can look like the birthplace of Free Speech and Human rights , but it’s been phony, all PR. has not stopped for a minute to clean up its corruption or Join in an effective and practical way to face the abuses of government. has not missed a beat in catering only to their “friends.”
