Nutter Irate Over Gunfire at a Kingsessing Basketball Game, Offers $20k Reward

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Michael Nutter is clearly outraged that at least one gunman opened fire Monday night during a packed, city-sponsored basketball game at the Kingsessing Recreation Center. City Hall is putting up a $20,000 reward for information leading to the gunman.

During halftime of the adult league game, police say, at least one man opened fire where nearly 500 people were watching the game, resulting in injuries to six bystanders (see related story).

"They were having a basketball game, and some a**hole walked up and shot up the crowd," Mayor Nutter told KYW Newsradio today.  "I mean, who does that?"

"I believe there were police officers out there," the incensed mayor continued.  "Some people are just insane and stupid.  There's no other explanation for that kind of behavior."

Five men and a woman, all adult bystanders, were hit by bullets.  One person was shot in the stomach and was said to be in critical condition. The others were listed in stable condition with injuries to their lower extremities.

Police, who are still investigating, say another person in the crowd may have returned fire during the incident.

The Kingsessing Recreation Center was recently declared a "safe area" for young people when the city instituted a weekend curfew for teenagers (see related story).

"We're going to catch the little bastard, and he's going to do some serious time," Mayor Nutter added.
