Gone Country: Top Southern-Style Bars In Philadelphia

A Stetson hat and spurred boots can be hard to find in Philadelphia, but a few bars still rock Southern loud and proud. These are the best Southern-style bar options in Philly.

Contrary to popular belief, not all hipsters wear skinny jeans and wool caps. Northern Liberties had to cater to some of the cowboy boot-wearing crowd, too. Newly opened and touting a mechanical bull, this country and western bar offers an extensive menu as well. With drink specials almost every single night, a ladies night on Friday and free drinks for your birthday, this place screams honky tonk love. Not only does it promote that country twang, some of the female staff are dressed in Daisy Dukes and dance on the bar and tabletops. If that's your idea of a good time, then this is Philly's finest bar.

Take the Bull Fighter challenge, and eat two pounds of ground beef with four tortillas and all of the fixins' for $49.99. If you do it within 30 minutes, you get a T-shirt. This Tex-Mex place is an area establishment featuring Southern girls serving with a little extra flair. If that doesn't get you warm enough, heat up outside by the fire pits. Enjoy drinks and entertainment to live music while a few drinks turn everyone into a bull rider.

Touting country western music and dancing, this Broad Street staple will reopen its doors in 2013. A real post-Prohibition bar that looks like the inside of a barn, this is the place to be a real cowboy or cowgirl. Known for its rowdy atmosphere and rowdy clientele, the city decided to give this piece of history another go. Playing nice with the noise ordinance and neighbors, R5 Productions will make this place into a music mecca worth checking out as South Philly continues to resurrect itself.

This restaurant, club and bar has a lot to live up to. It promises to be "the best country dance club in the whole Northeast." With line dancing, a fire pit patio and free admission for ladies on select nights, this place hits the bullseye on the country western mark. Also hosting country singers and performers with low-ticket prices, it makes up for the stiff price of some drinks. If it is true atmosphere you are looking for, this place is your country meal ticket. A slight detour from Center City will get you rootin' and tootin' in no time.

Of course Philadelphia's most fabulous gay club would host a country western line dancing and two-steppin' night on Fridays. From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., get your Southern swerve on with free dance lessons from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Hosted by DJ Cliff Roberts, Woody's Country Night takes itself seriously. Dancing - even with a drawl and a twang - is not for the faint of heart. When you've worked up a sweat, wash it all down with some of the strongest drinks in town, then soak it all up with some of the best bar food around.
