Martin Luther King Jr. Day Of Service
When Madeline Hoffman’s grandmother taught her how to sew, she decided put her newfound skills to good use by creating wheelchair and walker bags for those in need.
Five thousand volunteers converged on Girard College’s campus, headquarters for the day’s event, to participate in 150 service projects.
A kick-off event was held Wednesday at Girard College, the headquarters for the nation’s largest day of service.
At Girard College, they say about 4,000 people will give their time today, all part of the 18th annual Greater Philadelphia Day of Service.
Free pet vaccinations will be administered later this month at an area animal hospital as part of Martin Luther King day of service. Low-income households are encouraged to sign up for an appointment.
“On January 17th, in the 16th annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, we are expecting another record turnout: this time 75,000, serving in 1,200 projects,” said Todd Benstein.
The 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. day of service in Philadelphia, which is the largest of its kind in the nation, will be held January 17th across the region.
