The colorful portrait of Dr. Shawn White, an AIDS and community activist who died last year, was unveiled Saturday with the help of his friend Tariq Trotter, AKA Black Thought from The Roots.
Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter of “The Roots” is lending his support for a mural that would honor the legacy of a beloved community leader he grew up with in South Philadelphia.
The mural, titled “Legendary,” towers six stories high and stretches 60 feet wide.
On the eve of this weekend’s “Roots Picnic” the band was honored by the Philadelphia Mural Arts program Thursday during the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Hip-hop music has always resonated loud in the streets of Philadelphia, and the city’s artists are truly some of the purist lyricists in the game, gaining critical success, acclaim and even multiple Grammy awards.
