SEWELL, NJ (CBS) — As expected, New Jersey Senior US Senator Robert Menendez has announced he is seeking a third term in Washington. He made his announcement Wednesday in his home town in North Jersey, and again at Rowan College of Gloucester County In Sewell.

There was no reference to last year’s corruption trial, which ended in a hung jury. Federal prosecutors declined to re-try the Senator, although a Senate Ethics probe goes on.

Menendez reminded some 100 supporters at the Sewell event of his record in fighting for the middle class as opposed to President Trump.

“The President and his enablers want a Washington run by CEO values. Profits over people. Stockholders over students. Corporate interests over communities.” Menendez said. “They may work for a company, but it’s no way to run a country.”

The Senator vowed to continue the battle on everything from universal health care to a living wage.

“When the cause is just, we don’t give in,” he continued.”When the odds are long, we don’t give up. And when the foe is bigger and stronger, we don’t back down. And we’re not backing down in this fight for the very soul of our country.”

Menendez faces a pair of opponents in the June Democratic primary, and is considered the odds-on favorite to be renominated. He did not take questions from reporters after his 15 minute speech.
