Russian Spy Ship 30 Miles From US Naval Submarine Base In Connecticut

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Russian spy ship that was spotted along the East Coast Tuesday is now near a U.S. submarine base in Connecticut.

The ship was located 30 miles from Naval Submarine Base New London. It is expected to turn around and head south toward Cuba.

The Russian vessel is designed to intercept signals from military bases.

The ship was initially patrolling off the coast of Delaware on Tuesday, according to CBS News.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin says the ship, known as an AGI (Auxiliary, General Intelligence), made a port call in Cuba and has been working its way up the East Coast.

"Here's what the Russians are very good at. They're good at mind games and they play three dimensional chess," intelligence analyst Ed Turzanski told Eyewitness News.

Turzanski lives in Philadelphia and is a former member of the U.S. intelligence community. He spent time in Russia and studied Russian intelligence matters.

"It's all part of Putin being Putin, testing limits and seeing what kind of reaction he'll get from the new administration," Turzanski said.
