Former Treasurer Accused Of Stealing Over $50,000 From South Jersey Youth Football League

TRENTON (CBS) -- A former treasurer for  a New Jersey youth football league is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the organization.

State Attorney General Christopher Porrino said in a statement that 49-year-old Michael DiFlorio, of Williamstown, New Jersey, was indicted Wednesday for allegedly stealing $56,777 from the South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League.

Porrino said DiFlorio used a debit card linked to the league's bank account to make more than $10,000 in cash withdrawals and purchases. DiFlorio is accused of writing more than $32,000 in checks made out to himself, and in one instance, his friend.

Porrino also claims DiFlorio stole more than $14,000 in cash generated by the league's 2015 championship game.

"Instead of being an honest steward and faithfully ensuring that every dollar entrusted to him was used for the benefit of local athletes, DiFlorio is alleged to have crookedly stolen league funds," Porrino said in a statement. "He betrayed the league's young members and set the worst possible example for them."

DiFlorio is accused of stealing the money from July 2014 to June 2016.

DiFlorio, who was indicted on a third-degree by deception charge, faces three to five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine.
