Using Fashion To Promote Youth Leadership In Philadelphia

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Super producer Kenny Gamble is hosting a night of style and grace Thursday night at the University of the Arts with the goal to support etiquette programs that train South Philadelphia youth.

'Pearls of Wisdom' and 'From Boys to Men'are two "finishing" programs that teach teenage girls and boys leadership, life skills and self-esteem over 27 weeks.

After the programs and once they graduate, the skills help them get into college.

"It helps them as they are trying to negotiate and navigate through this difficult world in which they are living in," said Fatimah Gamble, co-founder of Universal Companies the group that runs the program. She said their youth will host, emcee and help run the star studded "Evening of Style of Grace," which includes a fashion show and culinary delights.

Universal Co-founder Kenny Gamble said the food will be made by students from Universal Audenreid Charter High School's culinary program.

"The first time I saw them doing it, I was amazed at how well they were prepared," he said, "all of this is part of our greater goal of teaching self-awareness and community connection."

Gamble is a recent recipient of the prestigious Marian Anderson Award. He also helped launch the "Buy Black" program to help support African American owned businesses during the holiday season.

An Evening of Style and Grace will take place Thursday, December 1, 2016 at University of the Arts.
