City Officials Set New Goals For Youth Summer Employment

CITY HALL (CBS) -- City officials used a Tuesday afternoon to herald the success of a summer youth jobs program and set goals for next year.

Mayor Jim Kenney and other city officials talked about the importance of the jobs program and how it can put young people on the right path.

The WorkReady program, in cooperation with the Philadelphia Youth Network put 10,650 young people, ranging in age from their teens to early 20s into a variety of summer jobs.

Chekeema Fulmore-Townsend, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Youth Network, said Tuesday's event marked the launch of recruitment efforts for the private sector to open their doors.

"First goal is early commitments because if we don't have enough money early enough it's really hard to plan to actually grow the number," she said. "My second goal is that we are able to minimally serve the 10,650 again who return, but of course we want to kick that number up higher."
