Tips To Attract Birds To Your Yard This Winter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you'd like to attract winter birds to your property, there are some things you can do right now to prepare.

We all know that bird feeders and suet will draw birds into your yard. But Jason Parker, district manager of Davey Tree Expert Company's Philadelphia office, says there are other ways to attract our feathered friends. That includes planting trees and shrubs that are native to the region.

"Birds especially love anything with either seeds or berries, so you can pick species that are going to produce those. A lot of them produce late fall and will hold their berries through the winter."

Another tip is don't dead-head you perennials or bushes. Parker says that gives birds something to feed on all winter long. And if you can add a water feature to your yard, that's even better.

Parker says water is in short supply in the winter and a bird bath or small pond will lure more creatures to your yard.
