KYW's Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Despite evidence linking salt intake to hypertension and cardiovascular disease, dietary salt intake in the U.S. is on the rise. But we know from numerous studies that reduction in salt is extremely important.

It hits all groups: African-Americans have high rates of hypertension and cardiovascular disease which is made far worse by high salt diets.

Women have a higher risk of stroke than men and once again reducing salt can be a big help.

Even younger people can benefit. This is because over many years the damage of even slightly elevated blood pressure can cause damage to the body.

The bottom line here is that salt intake should be monitored, regulated and looked into. There are many places salt can creap into your diet, including processed and pre-prepared foods.
