Electronic Weight Monitoring Systems May Make Things Easier For Truckers In NJ

TRENTON, NJ (CBS) -- Truckers making their way through New Jersey will now be able to make that trip a little easier, thanks to a system now in play in several other states.
Think EZ Pass through a toll booth and you've got the basic idea behind the new NJ Pass system in effect at the three weigh stations on entrance routes into the state, including the one on 295 north at Carney's Point. Kevin Israel is a spokesman for the Department of Transportation.
"That's going to be a system used at weigh stations to allow certain trucks to bypass the weigh station thus allowing traffic to flow easier," Kevin Israel, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, told KYW Newsradio.
The system will not only reduce waiting lines when those weigh stations are open, it'll also make things easier for state police who patrol them.
Trucking companies can sign up on line at www.njpass.net for a fee determined by the size of the fleet and the length of time a company wants to be enrolled.
