Man Gives Family He Just Met $5K To Make Dream Of 4yo With Cancer Come True

MARLTON, N.J. (CBS) – The family of a four-year-old battling brain cancer are thankful for the kindness of a stranger this Thanksgiving.

Little Chase Gilchrist and his dad, Scott, were at the McDonald's on Route 70 in Marlton on Wednesday when a man with his granddaughter asked about what medical condition caused Chase to have a bald head.

The two fathers had an instant connection when it comes to facing adversity.

"The man, Jim, said he lost a daughter in a car accident, hit by a drunk driver," says Scott Gilchrist.

Chase saw the man was emotional and gave him a hug. Then something unexpected happened.

"Later that night while I was at work he came to the house and gave my wife an envelope and said 'this is for Chase' and she opened it up and there was a check for $5,000 in it," says Gilchrist.

Jim, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the $5,000 is to grant Chase's wish of going to Disney World.

"For them to do that is just amazing to me, I'm shocked, I'm still in shock," says Chase's mother, Nicole Gilchrist.

On Thanksgiving Day Eyewitness News spoke with Jim's wife, who said he mentioned the little boy with cancer when he got home, but didn't tell her about the check.

"He's not in trouble," she said with a smile, "sometimes he likes to play Santa Claus."

Chase said if he ever sees Jim again he'd simply tell him "thank you."
